What would your do with a $1mm to help Skidmore be more sustainable? That is the question that students in MB351 – Sustainable Planet are trying to answer. NYSERDA, the authority charged with improving the electric grid in New York State, is providing $1mm for a student initiated project to improve either campus or community sustainability. Three awards will be announced in April.
MB351 students explored a number of potential projects including a clean transportation/biofuel infrastructure to cut down on the greenhouse gases generated by campus security and other campus vehicles and a green gym that uses the kinetic energy generated by using the machines at the gym to generate electricity to run the gym. Ultimately, we will focus on an Internet of Things installation of meters with user friendly interfaces that teach students how their behavior either creates or saves greenhouse gases. More to come.
