The first round of the competition will be held on Friday afternoon, February 24th. We anticipate having separate sets of presentations for Social Entrepreneurship/Not-For-Profit businesses and For Profit Businesses. Presentations will begin at 1:30pm on the 2nd Floor of the Dining Hall.
I would like for us all to meet for lunch in the test kitchen of the Dining Hall at Noon on the 24th for a judge’s orientation and for us just to get to kindle or rekindle, as the case may be. Either Barb Casey or I will be waiting in the Atrium of the DHall to give you a ticket to get inside.
We anticipate that the presentations will go on till about 6:00pm. The SE presentations should end by 3:00 after which the judges will meet to choose those businesses that will proceed to the final (to be announced at the end of ALL presentations). For Profit presentations will commence at 3:30pm, ending around 6:00pm. The For Profit judges will then convene to choose those businesses that will go on to the final round of the competition.
Dinner will follow (in the 2nd floor of the DHall) for all contestants and their families, judges, and a few others (we’re shooting for 7pm). Those businesses that are going on to the final presentations (in both categories) along with the names of their mentors will be announced at the beginning of the dinner. We found that having the dinner following the presentations has been an important time for the students to speak w/ the judges to get a sense of their strengths, weaknesses, etc. in their presentations, and for the finalists to meet with their mentors.
For those of you who are not local, we’ll be putting you up at a hotel in town. I’ll assume that you’ll all need a place for Friday night, as the evening is not going to end until at least 8:30pm or so. Let me know if you plan to arrive on Thursday. I need this information ASAP so that we can reserve a block of rooms for you.
The final business plans will be due to me no later than Noon on Friday February 17th. I will send them to you electronically, unless you would prefer that I print them out and send them to you via the USPS. If the latter, then you’ll be receiving them express mail more than likely on Monday. Send me an address at which you would want them sent.
That’s about it for now. Needless to say, the students are working hard on their business plans and Skidmore is so excited to be hosting the Freirich Business Competition, now in its 7th year! Thanks, as always and especially, to Ken Freirich who spearheaded this competition seven years ago and who continues to be the inspiration that keeps it as one of the preeminent events at Skidmore College.
